Energizer Qi – Review

In November, I introduced you to the Energizer Qi when they generously sponsored a giveaway.

According to their press release, ““Next generation charging technology for smartphones has arrived with the Energizer® Inductive Charger. It offers an easy and convenient way to charge smartphones without cords and cables. This advanced technology features Qi… the new universal standard for inductive charging, so it will power up devices like smartphones now and in the future regardless of manufacturer. The Energizer® Inductive Charger is designed to work with Qi-enabled devices, whether Qi is built into the device or the device has a Qi accessory. It features two large charging zones that don’t require locking the device into a precise position, so you’ll be sure to have your phone charged and ready to go when you need it. It also features a USB port to meet additional charging needs.”

“Designed in cooperation with Wireless Power Consortium co-founder ConvenientPower, the first generation of the Energizer® Inductive Charger:
• Delivers easy, convenient, cord-free charging for the iPhone® 3GS/3G and BlackBerry® Curve™ 8900 via sleeve and door accessories
• Offers two large inductive charging areas with one additional USB charging port
• Is compatible with Qi-enabled devices today and in the future; Qi is an open source standard for products defined for 5 watts of power or less (e.g., phones, mp3 player, cameras)
• Provides freedom of placement within the two large inductive charging areas
• Does not contain magnets for alignment, so charging doesn’t require precise placement
• Features a sleek, rounded rectangle design with two LED charge indicators”.

In addition to the inductive charging unit, you can also purchase charging accessories. You can buy an iPhone® 3GS/3G Qi Sleeve and a BlackBerry® Curve™ 8900 Qi Door. The iPhone 4 sleeve will be introduced at the next CES which is great!

Wondering How the Energizer Qi Works?

“Qi is the new universal standard for inductive charging. It’s a common language for inductive chargers and devices to talk to one another. So any device with a Qi-enabled accessory or with Qi built directly into it can charge on any Qi inductive charging pad.

Inductive charging is what happens when two devices—one designed to send power and the other designed to receive it—touch one another and energy is transferred between them. Until today, these two devices had to be designed specifically for each other. But Qi changes all that.

Think back to the first time you heard of Bluetooth® or Wi-Fi™. Just like those technologies set the standard for hands-free and Internet connections, Qi is how everyone will use inductive charging in the future. Established by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), Qi allows you to universally charge your Qi-enabled smartphones, cameras, mp3 players and anything else that uses up to 5W without directly plugging in those devices. We anticipate Qi will be widely adopted by consumer electronics device manufacturers and other members of the WPC, providing you with the freedom to charge all Qi-enabled devices on a single charging station without multiple cords and eventually without accessories.”

I received the Inductive Charging Unit as well as both Blackberry and iPhone 3G charging sleeves. While I have neither a Blackberry 8900 nor an iPhone 3G, originally my brother was going to use the charger with his Blackberry. With the busyness of the holiday season, our conflicting work schedules and some bizarre snowstorms, we couldn’t find a time to get together so I could hook up the unit at his house and see how it worked. Instead, one of my friends was thrilled at the chance to help me review the Inductive Charging Unit the Blackberry Sleeve with her Blackberry 8900.

She was pretty excited at this opportunity because she said that one of the things she was hoping it would do was help her remember to charge up her phone! Setting up the Inductive Charging Unit was really easy – you literally just had to plug it in once you’d found a spot to keep it! Then all we had to do was put the replacement for the back cover of on her Blackberry and it was ready to charge! I was impressed at how simple it was to set up! She was also impressed by the fact that it is cord-free and wireless so you don’t have to worry about all kinds of wires and cords!

I’ve been talking to her since we set up the system and she is really impressed with it! She says that it makes it easy to keep her Blackberry charged at all times and she’s had no problems with it at all!

I’m looking forward to seeing more and more items become Qi-enabled. I really think it is the future for all products that need to be charged!
