A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend the Toys“R”Us Toy Fair to get a sneak peek at some of the hottest toys this holiday season.
Yes, the holidays! Have you started thinking about it yet? With all the decor and gift wrap already in stores I have to admit I’ve already started thinking about my shopping budget and shopping list.
I met the Toys“R”Us Chief Play Officer, 11 year old Alex Thorne, at the fair and asked him to tell me about some of his favourite toys.
It was pretty clear that video games were near the top of his list.
We checked out Skylanders Swap Force where you can now mix and match their tops and bottoms which give them 1 of 8 distinct ways of moving and allows players to get into different areas of the game.
Then we headed over to the Disney Infinity booth where we spent a few minutes playing with some of his Disney and Disney/Pixar characters. Using the INFINITY Figures and placing them onto the base, Alex demonstrated how to unlock virtual toys to create his own game.
XBOX One was a very popular booth for both adults and kids at the Toy Fair. I got a quick demo of the different kinds of “rumbles” the controller can do depending on the type of game you’re playing and how to change from TV to movies to music to a video game with the sound of your voice. XBOX One offers a very custom tailored
experience not just for video game lovers but entertainment fanatics as well.
Furby Boom immediately caught my attention as my 5 year old has been begging for one since last year. Unlike previous versions of Furby, Furby Boom creatures have bold patterns on their fur, twice as many responses and “Furby owners” can raise digital Furby Furblings in the Furby Boom app. This is definitely on my shopping list this year.
Do these dolls remind you of something from the 90s? Zelfs are similar to trolls however they are colourful fairy elves with their own distinct look and personality. They come with hair styling accessories and I’m sure they will be a favourite amongst girls this coming holiday season.
Have an artistic scientist in your home? The Crayola Marker Maker allows kids to create their own custom markers using ink bottles, measuring tubes, mixing chart and tweezers. I can’t wait to get this for my 5 year old. I think she’d have a blast making her own markers!
If you have little ones that are into fart noises and fans of Despicable Me movies, the Fart Blaster might be what you’re looking for. Pull the trigger to hear a fart sound and get a whiff of banana scented burst of air. Yup, it does what it says! I tested it several times just to make sure 🙂
What would the holidays be without an interactive Elmo? Sesame Street Big Hugs Elmo gives hugs, says fun phrases and sings songs. With 50 plus animated sounds and phrases and the ability to become sleepy, sing a lullaby and make sleeping sound effects when put down in a flat position, this is definitely going to be a hit with my 2 year old. Alex loves him too!
The Y-Volution YFliker F3 Scooter (a Toys R Us Exclusive) would be a great gift for active kids and adults. I got to test out the light weight three wheeled scooter for a few minutes and found it to be a lot more fun than traditional ones.
It was easy to control and I appreciated having a brake on it. The F3 is recommended for 7-12 year olds. Y-Volution also has a smaller version (YFliker F1 Scooter) with the same braking capabilities and three wheel design for 5-9 year olds.
Have you started thinking about holiday shopping or am I the only crazy one that plans weeks in advance?
