Holiday Gift Guide – Hexbug Nano Review and Giveaway (Canada)

I’m always intrigued by toys with a tech element (I’m basically a big kid at heart myself!). When I saw Hexbugs, my immediate reaction was, “These are SO COOL!” and I couldn’t wait to see how they worked in real life!

Like other Hexbugs, Nanos are robotic creatures that act like real bugs! The newest autonomous robotic creature in the HEXBUG lineup comes in 5 collectible colours. Batteries included. They are pretty cool because, not only do they behave like real bugs, they also flip over by themselves!

I have to admit, I was intrigued by these tiny little creatures, so I searched around to find out how they actually work! From the Hexbug website, I learned that The motor inside the Nano rotates a counterweight that causes forces up and down. The down force causes the legs to bend and the Nano moves forward. The up force causes the creature to hop lifting the front legs off the ground and allowing the legs to unbend. This up and down movement repeats several hundred times per second causing the Nano to move forward. The Nano creature’s ability to flip over by itself is due to the rotating forces caused by the motor and the unique internal and external chassis design (and a little magic). How cool is that (and where were these toys when I was a kid)?

There are so many awesome things you can do with a Hexbug Nano!
